Never really done the whole drabble thing, I'm not overly fond of them although there are some that are exceptionally good.

The Five Times
Ship/Fandom: it does have one but I think I shan't give it.

The first time was hot and cold. Extreme. The kisses were like biting, mouths unused to being soft with each other. The ground was hard and the bruises lasted for days just like the shock and the wonder. You didn't talk.

The second time was unsure and awkward. Are we really doing this again? Did we really do it before? Do you want to? Are you sure? Like this? There? Where? There.

The third time was casual and humorous. Isn't it silly, all this sweat, all those tears. You still have your socks on. Your hair is sticking up in the back. Your lips are swollen. Do you think anyone will notice? Will you stay a while longer? Maybe.

The fourth time was serious and oddly hollow. His grip was firm, he held you in place in case you drifted away. He pinned you with his eyes in case you forgot who he was or where you were. He needn't have, you were perfectly aware. His hands were cold and his eyes questioning. What did he say? Is he angry? You don't want to talk about it.

The last time was like the first time only afterwards there was no confusion. Only echoes inside your head and the same bruises and aches. Is that it then? Yes.

Well there are some it's a lot more likely to be than others given my writing and reading habits, but aside from that I refuse to tell. Who do you think it is?

It could be anything, really, but I'm guessing it's Draco/someone-he-shouldn't-have.

It is tentatively Draco/Harry, but isn't everything it seems, the POV is tentatively Harry's. I think it would probably be more interesting if it wasn't H/D. Perhaps it could be Sirius/Snape or Lucius/Snape or Harry/George or something. Or maybe some other fandom altogether. Dom/Billy.

Something Lucius, yes. Snape doesn't strike me as one who leaves bruises. Lucius/Harry? *grins* Never read that before, but it does seem kind of interesting.

Oh I like it as Draco/Harry, though. Though I confess I can't completely decide what's going on. Maybe not enough info, maybe am just thick. There's a failure between them, and they care enough that the failure matters, but not enough to be able to escape it. Is it that the infatuation simply doesn't have enough substance to it, when they put it to the test? Do they differ irreconcilably in how seriously they take the situation? Is there an implied backstory where they are forced apart?

But whatever is going on, and whoever it is going on with, it still hits you vividly as a reader. So I'll just think of it as a powerful, abstract, description of the arc of a romantic failure. Cool.

To my mind something happened between 4 and 5, something related to other people finding out about it and the relationship couldn't get past the reality of other people. As long as no-one else was involved everything was pretty simple. Some of the he's in 4 started as they's but then I thoughht maybe it was just one other that specifically found out, probably Ron. I think that Harry didn't say or do the right thing as far as Draco was concerned and vice versa, they were reminded of what they didn't like about each other and that killed things until they both knew it was over.

Interesting! When you say that, I can see it as Ron, precisely. But it's like one of those rabbit/duck optical tricks. Because I had actually read the "he"s in #4 as referring to one of the lovers. So I had projected the possessiveness, the fear of loss, as one of them sensing an inadequacy in the others' response, rather than an outsider perceiving the relationship as a threat. Ambiguity rocks!

BTW, have I mentioned that I think you are an excellent reviewer. I loved what you wrote for Circles.

*blushes* Well, it's my poor compensation for not being a writer. I can't do birthday drabbles, I can't do fanart, so I just write these longish, wonky, rambling reviews of stories I like a lot. Makes me happy that it made you happy, because sometimes I confront these beautiful and subtle stories and feel like a cat bringing a dead bird as a gift, you know? So, thanks!

H/D works, of course, but I think Sirius/Snape wrks too, and even Lucius/Snape, after all. I don't see it being Dom/Billy, but maybe it's 'cos I tend to read Happy Monaboyd *g*.. In Lotrips I'd have said maybe Viggo/Sean B. or Orli or Lij - funny how I seem convinced it has to be Viggo somehow. *frowns at funny ideas of self*

Regardless of the paring, I LOVE it. I think it's powerful while bittersweet, gripping in a loose sort of way - sad but also joyous with the glory of the inner trouble descriptions.

Yep.

I think it's the intensity of "His grip was firm, he held
you in place in case you drifted away. He pinned you with his eyes in case you forgot who he was or where you were." You can imagine that of Viggo.

I have Shaenie's intense Billy in my head so I could see that as him with Dom and Lij in the 3rd role of breaker up or vice versa.

Sirius/Snape can work like Harry/Draco so it's easy to put them in those places.

I also often relate to Shaenie's Bill and Dom and Lij, but as I keep thinking this is a 'happy' story where they won't ever part... the breaking thing is what makes me not see it, I guess.

anyhow, another bravo. :)
