Slightly biased review of Blood Roses:
"It's a dark, sexy exploration of betrayal and reinvention, fueled with an evil sense of humour and a vicious final scene that makes you twist uncomfortably in your chair at how much you're agreeing with the nastiness being meted out on screen. With stand-out performances from thinking girl's fancy Benjamin Green and Brit scream queen Marysia Kay, the best way I can describe it is Twilight for grown-ups. Seriously worth your time when it starts hitting the festivals this year." - http://excusesandhalftruths.com/2009/04/17/blatant-pluggage/

I've just finished uploading my Blood + Roses blog. It's all backdated so you need to go to http://marysiak.livejournal.com/tag/bloodroses and go back to the start to read it. There're still more photos to go up, but I'll add them normally. I don't have the last few days of photos anyway, need to get them from Simon Aitken (the director). The official site is at http://www.bloodandrosesmovie.com/ but there's not much up there yet. There's also the Director's blog at http://www.myfirstfilm.co.uk/ and the production company's site at http://www.independentrunnings.com/

Wednesday 28th Nov

Up at 9am to shoot the kitchen scene with Martin, Kane and Alice. I'm only actually in the scene at the very end so I'd rather be in bed all told. I get my bits done first and leave them to do Alice and Martin's singles while I go back to the bedroom. We get the first part of the scene done before Richard, our DoP, leaves to go back to London for the night. He has an award ceremony to attend (the BIFAs).

Then me, Ben, Pamela, Brendan and Adam decide to go into Liskeard to do .... well whatever there is to do in Liskeard on a Wednesday afternoon, which proves to be not much. Simon drops us off, we discover the library is closed so Pamela can't check her email. We look at some craft stalls, wander around some shops, talk to a couple of parakeets and eventually go to the pub. It's actually a pretty cool pub, everything I can think of to describe it actually sounds really patronising - but I really liked it - it had a couple of cats and a pool table and a dodgy juke box. I was already really tired and feeling a bit unwell so when Simon came to get us and instead we decided to stay in town for dinner I figured I better have some coffee. Rather than waking me up this succeeded in making me feel supremely unwell and I had a moment over the pool table where I thought I might pass out (oddly this seemed to improve my game, perhaps cause I was so determined it be over so I could fall over). Caffeine never did agree with me, stupid stuff.

We tried the wine bar for dinner, but it was really expensive, so we decided to drive out to the diner on the motorway called Route 38 - which proved to be inconveniently shut. We ended up at an empty Chinese restaurant called Hot Wok, which was actually really good. However I was still feeling really rotten so I didn't go for the all you can eat buffet or the mojitos, just some duck in cherry sauce. I hung around very briefly when we got home but quickly headed for bed.

Thursday 29th Nov

9.30am start to shoot the next part of the Ted and Alice scene out in the garden. This is the scene that Pamela and I did in the auditions, so we know it pretty well. It's cold outside though so there's a lot of running in and out. When we finish I go upstairs for a bit. Then I have to go over to the farmhouse to read in some lines for a phone conversation scene.

I decided it was high time I tried out the swimming pool, otherwise I would have brought my costume for nothing. Although between still being tired and run down and the heft of removing the pool cover I was far from up to much by the time I got into the pool. It was nice though, should have done much more of it, but swimming means washing my hair and I don't like to have to wash it too often when I'm filming with semi-permanent dye in my hair, I suspect daily chlorine would strip the colour out pretty quickly. The shower down there was particularly nice, not so fancy as ours but about 10 times as much water pressure.

Richard came back for dinner with finely sculpted sideburns, having not won an award due to the rules having changed or something like that. Basically what it seemed to come down to was that they were too good to win as they decided to give the award to less experienced people. Or something. There was a copy of This Is England in his gift bag though a bunch of us sat down to watch it. It was very good if a little disturbing, I'd been wanting to see it for ages. Sam was overcome with emotion despite having seen it twice before.

Friday 30th Nov

My last day. I have one scene to shoot and all I have to do is be asleep in the bed while Ted checks me over. It's a weird day, I'm not really sure what to do with myself before I leave at 1.30pm. I spend some of the time finalising getting the photos so far off of Simon's laptop and on to mine and packing once they're out of my room. Then it's stew and dumplings for lunch and time to leave. Our runner, Shauna, drops me at the train station. I'm twenty minutes early and it's raining, as it has been and continues to do all day. I sit at the train station and cry because I am a big sap. I spend the train journey starting to organise the photos on my laptop. It's over.

Monday 26th Nov

Pamela Flanaghan (Alice) and Adam Bamborough (Ted) arrive today and will be here for the rest of the shoot. We also get access to the farm house and it's games room from today. Pamela, Adam, and Brendan (the sfx guy) will be staying in the farm house and Simon and Stephanie are also going to move over there to make more room in the manor for everyone else. The farm house is really beautiful, I think I like it better than the Manor, it's cosier and has secret staircases and the master bedroom has the most enormous bed ever.

Several parties go out seperately to search for evidence of monsters (now specified as a giant cat of some sort). Ben and Simon go out early before I'm even out of the shower. Then I go with Kane so as to have a first hand witness to where exactly things occurred. We carefully study the undergrowth for disturbances, but alas find nothing. Later Kane and Sophie go back out so she can check out the scene of the crime in daylight.

Jane dresses for dinnerIt's the first time we do the dramatic makeover change for Jane and it occurs to us somewhat into the process that we probably should have done makeup tests for this in pre-production to make sure me, the director and the makeup girl were all on the same page. It quickly becomes evident the makeup girl is on a completely different page, I start to panic. Some to-ing and fro-ing, I try not to over react, I redo the eyebrows and partially change the eyes, all is more or less resolved. The whole thing takes about two and a half hours. The final outfit goes down very well, although I keep walking out the shoes, which are slightly too big for me when wearing sheer stockings. For those interested all the jewellery for this outfit was sourced by me and the director in charity shops and Claire's Accessories on our last Thursday off.

This isn't the last of it - we probably should have got together during the pre-production period and run this whole scene with actors, director and DoP at the very least. It's the most complicated scene, well two scenes really, in the film and we have only two evenings to shoot it. Five actors, lot's of dialogue, two special effects sequences and lots of camera angles to cover. First we have to cover the previous section at the front door. Then the first half of the dinner scene is only Jane, Ted and Alice; but things are still tense and it takes until 2.30am to finish it. I'm really flagging by the end of it and I have all my singles to do last!

We had a stills photographer come in today, but he didn't seem to take very many photos and he disappeared before we got to the farm house for the start of the dinner scene proper!

Jane, Alice and Ted at dinner

Tuesday 27th Nov

I try and get a bit of a lie in, but end up getting up when the crew do as the kitchen is under my bedroom. It's all hands on deck this evening for the second half of the dinner scene. Pamela goes into makeup with Brendan hours before we start. Sophie deals with Kane's blood effects. It's a lot more fun tonight, it's nice to all be working together, and the crew have more of an idea what's needed because the set is the same. Also it's hard to be glum with blood effects going on. In fact this turns out to be an issue when Charlie (sound), Richard (DoP), and Kane (Martin) completely lose the ability to keep a straight face on one scene. Kane dips out as he's not actually seen in shot, but eventually we have to break for Charlie to pull himself together. Ben and I (who are actually in the scene) have no such problems, professionals that we are.

The effects shots go very well and again we wrap around 2.30am.

The stills photographer was supposed to come back today and he didn't show up :(

Today I pushed Kane down the stairs... the joys of low budget stunt work. (No actors were hurt in the process of making this movie.) Kane was really hyper this morning, possibly for fear of actually being pushed down stairs, so things were quite high energy and fun. Went for a really long walk this afternoon, made it to the moors and explored some old ruins, didn't get back till well after dark (gets dark so early this late in the year).

Thursday 22nd Nov
Day off in Plymouth, I posted to LJ for real as I got one whole hour on the interweb! Went to see Beowolf, it was shit.

Friday 23rd Nov
Long kitchen scene around the midpoint of the film. Chowed down on some raw meat. As I demanded the high quality steak someone had bought for dinner rather than the scary stuff they had poured food colouring on it was actually rather yummy. I vaguely browned the top and bottom of a bit of it the next day and had it for dinner. Mmmm.... meat. Ben arrived back from London this afternoon, having successfully endured someone poking a very long needle into his spine. 200th slate of the film!

Martin and Jane in the kitchenSlate 200!

Saturday 24th Nov
Ben was co-opted into an additional scene with me pretending to be someone else, we decided we might need some flashbacks to Jane's rape for either near the beginning of the film or maybe as reference during some of the later scenes where it's mentioned. Aside from that it was Kane doing most of the work today. As tomorrow is a day off we decide to make a night of it in Liskeard. We hit a rather nice wine bar first and got pleasantly tipsy and then descend on the only place that stays open late in Liskeard - the dreaded Cornish Ivy. Words cannot fully express, but anyone who's lived in a smallish rural town with only one nightclub/disco will know exactly what we found. I felt very over dressed in my jeans and cowboy boots and long sleeves. The 20 minute power cut was particularly entertaining. But we all danced up a storm and had a great time to such cutting edge tunes as Hungry Eyes from Dirty Dancing - I did manage to get them to play some Prodigy at least. The police were out in force when we left at about 2am, but we managed to escape harm aside from one guy trying to grab our makeup artists breasts, she was rescued by Andy the Focus Puller. Surprising really as we had the only two men in the place with long hair, and that's always risky. Taxi back to the Manor and bed.

None of the people in this photo are drunk, honest...

Sunday 25th Nov
Another day off in preparation for the final push to the end, Monday and Tuesday are both going to be heavy days. Simon, Ben and I head to Golitha Falls to go for a wander (despite minor hangovers) and we nearly lose Simon and his camera into the river! Then we met up with Kane and Stephanie and went to see American Gangster.

After I'd gone to bed I heard people talking loudly in the kitchen. It turns out Kane and Sophie were out walking down the road when they got chased by a monster of some sort. The boys sort out a posse, Ben takes his nunchucks, and they go investigating in the dark. I stay in bed, if I thought they might actually find anything I'd go, but it's late and I'm sleepy. Sure enough they return having found nothing.

Am trapped in Cornwall, there is no escape until the 30th of November. I am in a very expensive internet cafe with only one hour to touch the real world. But there is awesome news.

The trailer for Colour From the Dark is up on YouTube and even though I have no sound here it looks completely beyond awesome and I am extremely excited.

It is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2mXS7EOu4U

In other film related news Lionsgate will be releasing When Evil Calls on dvd on the 8th of January 2008. See http://www.amazon.com/When-Evil-Calls-Sean-Pertwee/dp/B000YDKA9O/

Also the filming of Blood & Roses is going really well, I've seen some really awesome stuff in the rushes and I am really pleased with it. I am of course having a complete mental breakdown stuck here in Cornwall, but that is neither here nor there really. I think you're all going to really like the film, we have a great DoP and some great actors and Simon Aitken is doing a great job of keeping it all together. Proper blog entries and some photos will be forthcoming when I get back. Although I can't promise the same plethora of photos as you've had from Colour From the Dark as we have no official stills photographer on set. I took some great pics of some of the scenes I'm not in though.

We filmed the final scene of the film today, big effects makeup job for Sophie, assisted by Stephanie our set designer. I wasn't supposed to appear in the scene, but it was decided that I would appear at the beginning and then leave. It's wierd trying to figure out how much info to give about scenes, I don't want to give away everything about the film. Sophie did an amazing job, I'll say that much. There was also a minor continuity error in my costume that we didn't notice until some days later, I won't tell you what it is though, you can see if you can spot it in the final product... it may well not be visible.

Martin and JaneMartin (Kane John Scott)

We also shot the first half of a scene we shot last week while Ben was still here. Because of his scheduling issues we chose to split the scene in two as we needed two other actors (Marq English and Etta) and me for the first half and only me and Ben for the second half. things became even more interesting when it chucked it down all day and wouldn't stop to the extent it became impossible to go outside and film the scene where we shot the second half. A bit of constructive thinking later and we came up with a solution, shoot most of it tight in the kitchen and then pickup some initial wides quickly outside when the rain died down a little bit.

We had a power cut just as we were starting to get ready and thought we might lose half a day till it came back, but it came on quicker than we expected and we managed to shoot everything we had scheduled. Wore my teeth for the first time today, they're okay but you can't swallow properly so you spend the whole time making intermittent slurping noises as you attempt to drain the saliva from your mouth to prevent drooling - very sexy.

Spent all day in the master bedroom shooting a variety of sequences. Started off with some of the more weak and emotional scenes, some crying which is always a challenge, then some entertaining throwing up, and then moved on to the later stronger darker stuff. I keep forgeting to put my damn wedding ring on before we start, we need a costume/continuity person to remind us of stuff like that.

Sophie applies some blood to MarysiaJane and Martin

Kane had his first screen kiss with me today. A momentous occassion I hope as I forecast big things for him in the future.

Our runners have failed us, they didn't turn up today. We are a couple of people short of what we really need to keep things ticking over without people getting pissed off. I would say we need a continuity person, a catering/housework person and a runner or two. We have a lady coming in as of yesterday to make lunch for us, which is great, but dinner still became an issue.

Simon (the director) still isn't sleeping either. I miss Ben, he was keeping me sane. My stubble burn peeled off after the first scene (ick) and I'm hoping that will be the end of it. The skin there is thin and tender but seems okay.

We've had no fires on at all today so I'm worried it's going to be really cold tonight. Going to bed any minute, it's after 10pm. The Shining is on in the living room, but I am too sleepy to watch it and have seen it twice before anyway.

Well, not done a very good job on this blog keeping thing. Sorry.

A bit sleep deprived at the moment, I moved rooms to share the double room with Simon and Ben on Tuesday night so Kane could get a decent bed, but the last three nights I haven't slept well at all because it seems to get really cold and dry in that room and it wakes me up after a couple of hours. Dunno what happened, the first night in there it was perfect. I actually kipped on the living room sofa for a few hours last night and on Wednesday night. Need to re-rethink the sleeping situation. I can be a very light sleeper and I'm especially susceptible to low humidity.

Things have been going pretty well aside from the odd tiff about lack of runners, late shooting and food not being ready when people want it. Today we finally have runners, two of them, but we have lost Ben (Seth), he's gone back to London for a week to work and get his back fixed up (no we didn't break him, he broke himself doing kung fu way before the shoot). We also have a cook coming in to do lunch from now on.

Because Ben was going away for a week we shot a lot of the Seth stuff over this week, all the stuff except the big final scene with everyone in it which we'll do in the last week when Adam (Ted) and Pamela (Alice) are here. Some very intense stuff and from the look of the rushes we got some pretty impressive sequences. I also did some rather nifty stills photography, unfortunately I can't take stills from scenes I'm in. But as we're shooting HDV we should be able to get stills off the footage as well.

We had the 100th slate today, drank some cheap fake champagne.

I got stubble burn from kissing Ben in the seduction scene and it's a real pain in the ass. The skin went all dry and hard and tight and red by the next day.

Simon and Ben and Kane and I have gone for a couple of walks along the country lanes and I found some wild strawberries which were really gorgeous, also some blueberries and brambles, but they were a bit sour. We saw some sort of big bird of prey and a man who had been hunting with an albino ferret.

What we've been up to...

Mon - we did the freezing cold evening in a field scene, wasn't too bad really (actually it was f*cking freezing), but on watching back the rushes my nose looked very red. Ben and I had our first kissing scenes today, always strange doing romantic scenes with someone you hardly know, but particularly odd for me as I've never played a feature length romantic role before so this is kind of a scale above what I'm used to on the intimacy with strangers front. Fortunately Ben is very easy to get on with so there was no akwardness.

Seth and VictimBen getting made up (Simon in bg)

Tue - shot in a local pub all day and had dinner there too. Some cool vampirey moments with Seth and victim (Eria Sainio) and the first vampire teeth shots. Took us some time to figure those out but we got there eventually. We had initially planned to have teeth custom made but in the end it made more sense to buy standard ones and fit them with wax and fixodent. I took some cool stills this evening.

In the pub (Sophie, Marysia and Kane)Marysia wrapping up

Wed - shower scene with Kane (Martin), a bit fraught really. The hot water ran out and that and having to play the "I don't want you to touch me" thing while semi-naked in front of a camera crew can make things a bit weird. Plus when we did have hot water the lens kept steaming up. Today was the day for such things though, as we also shot the big seduction scene in the living room in the evening. Ben and I decided we wanted to really grab the audience with this one, having seen the rushes I think when you see the result you will agree that we succeeded. There was a bit of a mini rebellion among the crew over the food situation, despite the fact Ben very kindly ran in after his bit was done and got a meal going while we were finishing up outside on a dream sequence. We hid in the bedroom while they "discussed" the situation. This was one of the longest days of the shoot, but I felt it went really well and we got a lot of really good stuff despite all the challenges like rain, tricky fx shots and crew members having laughing fits at inopportune times.

Ben and MarysiaBen and Marysia await action

Thur - more fake blood and vampire teeth fun and games. Kane and Ben choreographed a mini-fight sequence to spice things up a bit. I took more cool stills. Kane and I had to go out and reshoot a bit from the first day that had focus issues. Tomorrow being a day off a lot of the cast and crew decided to stay up late drinking, but I was tired and went to bed reasonably early. We did sit and watch through a pile of rushes and it was good to see how nice things were looking, though there was one shot of me I really hated. Watching rushes is something I'm always cautious about, it can be very hard to watch your own performance.

Seth attacks MartinBen and Kane talking to Simon

Fri - our first day off. Simon (director), Ben and I head to Plymouth to find Ben a burger. That was pretty much all we accomplished. There are an unexpectedly large number of Greek restaurants in Plymouth and they all seem to be owned by the same people as they all have identical menus. On getting home we inflicted White Admiral on Ben (the film Simon and I worked together on in the same location as we shot this), I didn't mind watching it as I had never actually seen the second half of it as my first dvd copy was damaged and when the director resent me a copy I never got around to watching the rest of it.

I was going to do a video diary for this shoot, I brought a webcam with me and everything. But the thing is I just don't really like making video diaries, I far prefer writing. So you'll have to live with that.

We arrived by car yesterday lunch time; Simon, Ben and I drove down in a people carrier with a vast amount of gear. Everyone else arrived in dribs and drabs while Ben (Seth) watched the prize fight on telly, till we were all here by late afternoon. Buying of food, allocating of rooms, instruction regarding fire lighting etiquette (living room is heated by flame producing objects, and there's a rayburn stove in the kitchen), consuming of food, watching of X-Factor, playing of poker and then bed. Poker is a stupid game (in other words I lost - a lot).

The room situation is a little hit and miss, we are eleven people in a house designed for ten and four of those ten are supposed to be in two double beds - but we have no couples. Currently makeup and production design (both female) are sharing one double bed while Simon (the director) has the other, with Ben on the floor of his room. Kane (Martin) seems to have somehow ended up relegated to the bunk beds. I'm in the upstairs double room with the 1st AD, the same room that I shared with Eleanor James when we shot White Admiral as it happens. I think I'm even in the same bed. I'm too used to a double bed and masses of bedding now though, especially with it being November.

This morning we had a bit of a slow start before we got out to film the very first scene of the film, aside from a few rain and tractor noise issues it went well. It was nice to start at the beginning. However tomorrow we are apparently leaping to the end and shooting the very last scene of the film (well for me, there is one very short scene after it) at 6.30am. I'm not sure I feel up to either the leap in character arc or the early morning, especially if the threatened schedule of an evening shoot outside in a nightie happens. A 5.30am call and running around outside in November in a nightie at around 7-8pm as well sounds like a recipe for a really unpleasant day and a not particularly focused performance. Especially as I didn't sleep that well last night and we're not getting dinner tonight till 8pm, so I probably won't be able to get as early a night as I'd like. Will have to break out the ear plugs, the soundproofing in this house isn't terribly effective.

Quite sleepy now, hope dinner is ready soon.
